To Kill a Mockingbird Setting Activity
Objectives:
-Students will identify setting and cultural context of the novel To Kill a Mockingbird.

Background:
The setting of To Kill a Mockingbird is the fictional Southern town of Maycomb, Alabama in the 1930s. Although Maycomb is fictional in name, it is based off many actual Southern towns in that time period. Throughout the unit, you will find that many events that happen in the book actually took place during the 1930s in the South. The 1930s was a time of great turmoil and desperation for the United States. It was the period referred to as The Great Depression.
Activity:
1.Students will discover what it was like to live in the South during
The Great Depression. Review the web resources provided to find
information on the time, place, and historical/cultural context of the
setting.
2. Students will take notes on a shared Google Doc with their partner. Students need to have at least 15 bullet points from the resources, citing sources. (Copy and paste the url into the document.) Use the following links.

3. Students will turn the notes in via Google Classroom. Each group
member should turn in a copy.
4. Students will create a journal showing what life was like in
Maycomb, AL during the Great Depression. Students should create the
journal as though they are writing it from Alabama in the 1930s.
Students may choose to write in letter form with partners (back and
forth) or they may write as one person together. The journal should be
created in book creator so the students may add links, videos,
pictures, and text.
